Tournament Review

Fittingly, it was Martine’s partner Chad Smith who got the tournament underway. Chad surprisingly teed off a little early, some suggested to avoid the inevitable crowd watching his opening shot…surely not!





With such a huge number of players it was inevitable there would be some congestion around the course but as with the whole day the attitude of every player was superb, helped in no small way I’m sure by the copious supplies of sandwiches G&T’s, Fosters & John Smiths kindly distributed by our helpers for the day.









Every level of player took part, including our very own LinksLadies, Ann Talbot, Gaby Aschmann, Fiona Hobden & Jane Burns. For the ladies it was the first time they had ever taken part in a golf tournament after just a short course of professional tuition. They scored well & a great time was had by all, so much so, all other lady competitors have requested to play in the same groupings as our LinksLadies next year!










Amazingly just one player from 92 shot under par, an indication of just how tough the course can be. Our worthy winner was the ever consistent Mr. Tony Hartley. Tony amassed a superb 37 points from a 15 handicap, all the more impressive when you consider how infrequently Tony now plays. 2nd place went to Mr. James Burnell who achieved an excellent 34 points from a 12 handicap.

So, on we went to the evening presentation held at The Outback Inn. Once again, Chad & his staff did a sterling job in taking care of us. The food, as you would expect of such an establishment was superb. We were treated to two live acts along with a charity auction and raffle. A huge array of prizes and donations were made from both local businesses and individuals, ranging from a bottle of wine to a luxury boat cruise for 4!

But the day was ultimately about celebrating the life of an extraordinary woman, Martine Barthelemi and raising funds for the Huelva Downs Sydrome charity for children. Both were done in spectacular style, total players & guests exceeded 300 and the amount raised on the day…6,000 euros! An incredible achievement by all concerned.

Next year’s event is already pencilled in for May 23rd, confirmation of date and venue to be confirmed shortly.

Finally, I would personally like to thank every one of you for contributing to what was the biggest golfing event the ex-pat community of our region has ever seen, congratulations to all!
