Tournament Review

And you thought the Ryder Cup could be dramatic!

Well, our II Am-Am tournament got underway in glorious sunshine with the 1st round at the Seve Ballesteros course, Quinta Do Vale which produced some interesting scores, a little lower than some of the playing handicaps would have suggested. Team Steve & The Goderich Boys were our early joint leaders with only 7 points dividing the first 5 teams at the end of the first days play.

On we went to Castro Marim for round 2. The course with it’s tight fairways & relatively short holes seemed to suit some players more than others, notably Mr.Peter Walker who scored a superb 40 points playing off a 19 handicap. No mean feat on his first visit to the course. However it was The Kent Reunion who were poised at the top of the leader board at the end of day 2 with 196 points.

Our individual tournament “Winner Takes All” at Isla Canela provided a break in the team competition. As with the practice round on Monday the course once again proved to be the winner with no player achieving par. Interestingly just one week prior we had 92 players playing in our charity golf day & even then only 1 player played under par, an illustration of just how difficult the course can be. The final outcome was very close with 2 players out in front on 34 points. However, the competition, as it’s name suggests could only ever have one winner with Mr.Steve Connors taking 2nd place on a count back to give our winner ...Miss Deborah Bulman.

So we returned to Quinta Do Vale to play the final round with just 11 points separating 5 teams. With all 4 cards to count it was always going to be eventful. And what a day it proved to be….With no fewer than 5 changes in the final team standings it really was a fascinating day’s play. No place for the faint hearted as the leader board changed constantly. Our previous leaders The Kent reunion started as strong favourites and needed only a steady round to secure the title, but ultimately it was the class of the Cuesta San Diego team that came through to take the title by a margin of just 6 points.

The Weeks Highlights

A week’s golf such as this is sure to provide some memorable moments and once again our Am-Am did not disappoint…

Special thanks go to Mr. Jerry Simpson for giving us a version of “It’s not unusual” by Tom Jones at our “Sangria & Shots” night, the likes of which we had never heard before, nor hopefully will we ever again! Jerry has now been placed under an indefinite curfew by his wife for not returning home that evening. The best part of his act… swinging the microphone during the instrumental…it was the microphone wasn’t it Jerry?

Mr.Andy Lockwood for highlighting to us all the dangers of not applying suncream when out on the course. Andy somewhat resembled a belisha beacon on his return to the clubhouse at Castro Marim. As he was a great competitor (and a pretty splendid golfer) we had a collection to buy him a year’s supply of factor 86.

Mr.Robert Schmidt for asking the question at an immaculate Isla Canela course, bathed in 30C of sunshine…”Are we playing winter rules” Robert is shortly to publish a book entitled “ How to gain the advantage over your opponent”

The Avengers team for being the only competitors who could be bothered to get their own team logo put on their shirts.

Mr.Paul Taylor (3 handicap) for keeping his chin up when playing alongside Mr.Steve King (28 handicap) at Isla Canela. Steve scored a quite impressive 9 POINTS from 2 HOLES. Paul said he wasn’t in the least bit demoralised by this. “That’s why I just love stableford” said Paul “It gives everyone a chance” Paul went on “I would like to wish Steve well in his quest to lower his handicap, he’s always welcome at my golf club, he May never leave but he’s welcome!”

And finally my very favourite. Mr. Paul James who redefined course etiquette this week at Castro Marim. Paul managed to throw up at the practice range, side of the buggy, starters hut & the first tee. Castro Marim G.C. have since apologised to Paul & will now only serve Walls sausages at breakfast not the cheap ones they gave him. They also asked me to pass on the message they have banned him for life from the course. What was incredible though was that he could actually produce a swing whilst suffering from acute DT’s Even more amazing was he managed to score 28 points. Taking pity we purchased some heavy duty duct tape which should help steady his hands on the club on his return to us next year.
